Bridging the Gap—How IDAD is Putting Democratic Power Back into the Hands of Liberian Communities

The Institute for Democratic Action & Development, or IDAD, is actively strengthening Liberia’s democracy by bridging the gap between national policymakers and grassroots communities. As a leading force within the Legislative Monitoring Coalition, we pull back the curtain on government operations by tracking legislative sessions and publishing transparent lawmaker scorecards to demand direct accountability. True democracy cannot exist only in the capital, so we travel deep into rural counties to educate citizens on the Local Government Act, empowering them to claim their legal share of public revenue for local schools and clinics. Through our Citizens’ Feedback Mechanism, we bring marginalized youth, women, and traditional leaders face-to-face with regional policymakers to turn community grievances into real structural reform, shifting Liberia's political culture toward a transparent, responsive democracy driven by its people.
