The Institute for Democratic Action & Development (IDAD) and InfoQuest (IQ) warmly welcome the recent ruling by the Supreme Court of Liberia on April 23, 2025 regarding the Bill of Information filed by Hon. Jonathan Koffa against the Majority Bloc at the Liberia House of Representatives. This landmark decision reinforces the fundamental principles of separation of powers and constitutional governance that are essential to Liberia’s democratic development.
The Supreme Court’s ruling serves as a critical reminder that all branches of government, including the Legislature, must operate within the constitutional framework that governs Liberia. By affirming the limitations on legislative actions and upholding the constitutional rights of public officials, the Court has demonstrated its crucial role as the ultimate guardian of our Constitution.
IDAD and InfoQuest call upon the Legislature and the Executive Branch to fully respect and implement this ruling without delay as prescribed by our laws. The Legislature’s adherence to judicial decisions, particularly those from the Supreme Court, is not optional but a fundamental requirement of our constitutional democracy. The rule of law demands that no institution, regardless of its authority, can operate beyond constitutional constraints.
This decision presents an opportunity for all branches of government to recommit to the principles of constitutional governance, mutual respect, and separation of powers. These principles are not mere procedural requirements but the foundation upon which our nation’s stability and progress depend.
We extend deepest appreciation to the Supreme Court of Liberia for its commitments to upholding democratic principles, rule of law and constitutional governance in sustaining the peaceful environment of Liberia. We look forward to the Liberian Legislature most especially the House of Representatives in its acceptance of the ruling and fostering democratic governance and rule of Liberia.
IDAD and InfoQuest stand ready to work with all stakeholders to strengthen Liberia’s democratic institutions and promote greater understanding of constitutional governance among citizens.
