The meeting, which took place at the Speaker’s office on Capitol Hill in Monrovia, brought together key members of the Legislative Monitoring Coalition of Liberia, representing civil society organizations committed to enhancing legislative performance and public engagement with the Legislative processes.
Mr. Joseph Cheayan, National Coordinator of the LEMCOL), provided a comprehensive overview of the coalition’s mandate, objectives, and ongoing initiatives. His presentation outlined the coalition’s commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and citizen participation in the legislative process, while highlighting the potential benefits of a formal partnership with the House of Representatives.
Hon. Richard N. Koon, Speaker of the House of Representatives, delivered a special statement acknowledging the importance of civil society engagement in the legislative process. The Speaker’s remarks underscored the House’s openness to collaboration with organizations dedicated to strengthening democratic institutions and improving legislative outcomes for the Liberian people.
Demonstrating his commitment to advancing the partnership, Speaker Koon concluded the meeting by issuing a directive to his Deputy Chief of Staff. The Deputy Chief of Staff was mandated to coordinate a follow-up meeting between the LEMCOL team and Hon. Foday F. Fahnbulleh, Chairman on Concessions, to further discuss the coalition’s objectives and develop a comprehensive plan for an upcoming meeting with the broader Leadership of the House of Representatives.
This strategic approach reflects the Speaker’s intention to ensure proper consultation and coordination among relevant stakeholders before formalizing the partnership through the proposed Memorandum of Understanding.
The proposed partnership between the House of Representatives and the Legislative Monitoring Coalition represents a milestone in Liberia’s democratic development. Such collaboration could enhance legislative transparency, improve public access to information about Legislative proceedings, and strengthen mechanisms for citizen feedback on proposed legislation.
As Liberia continues to consolidate its democratic gains, partnerships between legislative bodies and civil society organizations like the LEMCOL are essential for building public trust and ensuring that the legislative process remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of ordinary Liberians.
The meeting marks the beginning of what both parties hope will be a productive and enduring partnership in service of good governance and democratic accountability.
Further details regarding the Memorandum of Understanding and the specific terms of the partnership are expected to be announced following consultations with the House Leadership and relevant committee chairpersons. At the end of the Meeting, the Coalition thanked the speaker for his commitment to improving Legislative governance in Liberia and pledged its commitments to objective, transparency and non-partisan approaching to the Legislative Monitoring and advocacy.
